Before waxing, there are a few things you definitely want to avoid to avoid irritation, pain, or poor results. Here’s a quick checklist:
❌ Things to avoid before waxing:
Alcohol (within 4–6 hours)
– These can make your skin more sensitive and increase discomfort during waxing.
Exfoliating too close to waxing
– Exfoliating is fine the day before waxing, but not right before—it can leave your skin too rough and irritated.
Moisturizers, oils, or lotions on the day of waxing
– These create a barrier that makes it harder for the wax to adhere to the hair.
Sun exposure or tanning
– Avoid tanning for 24–48 hours before waxing. Sunburn + wax = pain.
Take a hot shower or sauna right before waxing
– The heat opens your pores, but it can also make your skin more sensitive. Warm showers are better.
Using Retinol or Acne Medications (like Accutane)
– These medications make your skin extremely sensitive and more prone to tearing. Stop using retinoids at least 5–7 days before (check with your dermatologist if you’re unsure).
Don’t shave before waxing
– This will prevent the hair from bonding well enough to the wax, making the procedure less effective.
Don’t wax your bikini line while you’re on your period.
